Why so many people love Jeffreys Bay, South-Africa
by Katrien DebrierJeffreys Bay in the Eastern Cape of South Africa is a very popular holiday town for Southafricans wanting to enjoy the beach and sun during their summer vacation. In december and january tourism in Jeffreys Bay is therefor the biggest. The rest of the year, JBay is never really that busy, except maybe also over Easter, the Billabong Pro in July and during the September Shell Festival.
Jeffrey’s Bay is often called ‘ A Place of Dreaming ‘. It is a laid back beach town where the real locals walk barefoot. We arrived in Jeffries 5 years ago, planning to stay for 6 month and we always come back….that says a lot. And we are not the only ones! A lot of people visit and a lot of people decide to stay or come back …. What makes the town so attractive ? Here is some info on Jeffreys Bay…..
Jeffreys Bay is of course known as one of the best surf spots in the world . Supertubes is the most famous one and can offer you unreal standup barrels. There are about 10 surfspots to choose from though and when all of these connect, you have one of the longest waves in the world. Surf season is June to August, but there is always something to surf in JBay the whole year through…
Order yourself a Custom Jeffreys Bay Shaped Surfboard and don’t forget to visit the Surf Museum above the Quicksilver Surf Shop and discover some of Jeffreys Bay Surf History and Legends !
The climate in JBay is named ‘one of the best in the world’. It is very mild with limited very hot or very cold days. The sun is out almost every day and winters here can be better than summer days in Belgium
JBay locals love the rain, as it keeps the gardens green and makes sure there are no water restrictions. When the rain falls the sun is always around the corner though… we just love the weather in Jeffries Baai …
Another reason to visit Jeffries is for the Factory & Surf Shops. Billabong is the most famous surf brand in South Africa and the headquarters are located in JBay. Therefor Jeffreys Bay is often called Billabong Town. You will find more than 5 Billabong shops here of which one has the biggest collection of Surfboards for sale in South Africa. We mostly shop @ the Factory Shops at a fraction of the normal prices in the stores
Another big and new feature is the Fountains Shopping mall with about 60 shops and a big Pick n’ Pay Supermarket. When you drive into Jeffreys Bay, you can’t miss it. If you don’t feel like shopping, you might feel like going there for a Big Mac Menu or good movie.
Jeffreys Bay is divided into different areas. We like the Wavecrest Area the most, which is more residential but also has a supermarket and some small shops and restaurants. It’s developed on the hill and a lot of houses have view on the Bay or Surf. Central Jeffreys Bay is where you can see Ou Dorp on the Jeffreys Bay Map and where you can find more shops and restaurants and also the banks and post office. There is also an Industrial Area and you will find the Tokyo Sexwhale Township on the other side..
With the neighborhood watch and police in town working very close together against crime, JBay is a very safe and secure place to be, which is another reason why lots of Joburg people end up here.
The first hotel build in Jeffreys Bay was the Savoy Hotel and now you have a wide selection of backpackers, B&B’s, hotels, selfcatering rentals and family villa’s to enjoy your JBay holiday.
If you want to have a holiday home here or you have fallen in love with the place and are looking for a permanent residence here, LiveTheLife selected the best real estate agents in Jeffreys Bay and features there top selection of property for sale in JBay. There is lots of developments going on in town …
JBay is really a lovely town and offers everything you need. Since we came here the number of restaurants for example doubled and our new favourite place to eat with the best sushi and coffee in town is now Infood Restaurant & Deli. Jeffreys now even has a policlinic with 24hour emergency service and always a nurse and doctor on call.
There is so much to see and do in town and in the area that it is difficult to get bored here. You can visit several gameparks closely, play golf on the JBay Golf Course or the new Jubilee Lakes course which is coming soon. And you can do daytrips to St Francis Bay, Tsitsikamma, Knysna and other lovely towns,…. JBay is the perfect place from where to explore the Eastern Cape and surroundings…
Last, but not least, we have to tell you that you can see Dolphins here every day. Make sure you are on the Jeffreys Bay beach or in the water in the morning or evening, when the sun is just up or starts goes down, and then the chance is big that you will see the Dolphins swim by in the Bay or even have them surfing the waves together with you.
Dolphins can read the ocean like the best and they are certainly part of making Jeffreys Bay a real place of dreaming….
