Surroundings

Mundaka is placed in the Biosphere of Urdaibai’s Reserve and enclave of extraordinary environmental richness, having been declared by UNESCO Humanity’s Patrimony on December 1984.

Ancient fishing town facing the solitary island of Izaro turns this sea village into a huge privileged bay window. The North border is delimited by Matxitxako and Ogoño capes, and the South, from Bizkargi to Oiz going by Ibaizabal and Oka rivers. Steep mountains and its leaning cliffts surround the Stuary in its two edges.

The Reserve has a total area of 220 km², including so atractive places such as Laga and Laida beaches and buildings of huge architectural value as the San Juan of Gaztelugatxe hermitage, belonging to the neighbor fishing port of Bermeo, and San Pelayo, romanic hermitage of XII century. The district span many possibilities in satanding out the village of Gernika (with its Museum of Peace, the famous Tree of Gernika and the of parliament) or the picturesque port of Elantxobe.

The archaeological interest of the zone is placed in Santimamiñe caves, where you will be able to enjoy excellent ancient paints. On the way to the mentioned caves, you will find the Oma forest and the fauna shelter of Basondo.
