Overview

Location

The Mentawai islands lie about 100 kilometers off the West Coast of the Indonesian Island of Sumatera just south of the equator.

There are four main islands: Siberut, Sipora, North Pagai and South Pagai along with countless smaller islands scattered throughout the archipelago.

Accommodation

The catamaran takes a maximum of 8 passengers and a minimum of 5. She is ideally suited for couples or families with the cabin configuration being 2 forward cabins consisting of a single and a double bed and the after cabin having a double bed. There are 2 toilets and showers on the vessel and the cabins are air-conditioned.

There are 2 large outside areas for relaxing and a large saloon/dining area with a stereo DVD-CD player and a 32 inch wide screen TV.

Continuous 240 volt power is available to charge cameras etc which is supplied by 2 gensets and also a 2500 watt inverter. The main engine is a Lombardini turbo charged marine diesel and there is a good selection of sails on board.

There is also a 4 meter aluminum/ rubber inflatable with a 18hp outboard to get you to and from the surf along with a good selection of rods and reels.

The Boat

Planet Surf is a 53ft sailing catamaran. She was built in 1991 in South Africa, designed by Alexander Simmonis and is constructed of Kevlar/polyester resin with a foam core. She has navigated the world and with over 60,000 nautical miles under her keels is a proven safe vessel. In 2006 the vessel underwent a major refit in New Zealand and has been set up for surfing/sailing charters.

The owner/captain has had over 20 years experience on the ocean with more than 6 years operating surf charter boats in the Mentawai Islands off the coast of West Sumatera.

What to bring

Just bring everything you think you might need: ideally, a couple of spare boards (including a decent-sized gun), extra fins, leg ropes, plenty of wax, spare booties and rashies, etc. Finally, malaria is rife throughout the Mentawai's - another very good reason to choose a boat charter, which helps to protect surfers from mosquito bites. But you still have to take full precautions, including repellant, long sleeves and pants at night, and preventive medication. Get the latest advice on anti-malarial tablets from the medical experts in your home country

Naturally, with these temperatures you can surf without a wetsuit, but you'll need at least a vest or rashie (long sleeves recommended) for sun protection. Bring heavy-duty sunscreen and stiff-soled booties for reef surfing. High ankles are safer than low-cut booties, since coral reefs are full of holes. And anyone wearing a helmet in the Mentawai's is a sensible person, not a wimp. When it comes to surfboards and accessories, don't take chances.

Colorful markets are scattered throughout Padang selling many local products. There are 3 golf courses neighboring Padang as well as some beautiful lakes with nice cheap accommodation on there shores.

Upon arrival in Padang you will be met at the airport and taken to a local hotel to relax and unwind before departure in the evening.

After everyone has arrived you will be taken to the boat and briefed on all safety aspects about the vessel and will travel over night so you can have barrels for breakfast.

On board is fishing equipment, rods and reels, snorkeling gear, TV, DVD, stereo etc. Please feel free to use these as you wish.

Travel insurance is mandatory and should include Medivac option, this is to cover lost days of charter due to emergency or unforeseen circumstances.

PLEASE NOTE; All people entering Indonesia must have at least six months remaining on there passport and a entry visa if required.
