Santa Catalina’s perfect, long and hollow 6 to 10 foot waves marked a great start of the Panama ISA World Masters Surfing Championship. The best Master surfers from 21 countries finally wore the competition jerseys and started moving in the track that leads to the gold medal and a World Championship. After three days of pouring rain and onshore winds, the sun finally came out, revealing a field of mud throughout the contest venue. In a Woodstock-like environment, surfers, team members and fans weren’t caring too much about the dirt and mud covered clothes. What was important today was the gathering of the worldwide surfing tribe, the spirit of this great annual event, and the incredible display of high performance surfing that was seen in Round 1 of the Master (Over 35) and Grand Master (Over 40) divisions.

Dominican Republic National Team surfer Robert Reid gave a great example of the spirit of this event, “The mud doesn’t matter; the waves are incredible and we’re having a great time. With waves like this, it can snow and it wouldn’t matter.

Sixteen heats were held with a small break of one hour due to the low tide and dangerously shallow conditions. The usual suspects of Australia, Brazil, Puerto Rico and South Africa were the only countries that had all their surfers making it to the next round through the main event.

Grand Master Andre Malherbe (South Africa) made the best performance of the day, posting a combined score of 15.43, awarded after a sensational display of powerful carving manuevers.

In the same division, 2007 ISA World Masters Champion Magoo de la Rosa (Peru), showed no signs of weakness. His powerful backside looks better than when he was 20, and with single wave scores of 6.83 and 8.17, he made the second best combined score of the day (15.00).

“I’m happy about my performance but I’ve to say it was a tough heat. The tide changes a lot and makes it difficult to find waves, I only grabbed two”, said de la Rosa. “This is a long contest and you’ve to take it step by step, see different strategies with every surfer, every heat. I´m having a great time here, Santa Catalina is a beautiful place and the waves are great.”

Other highlights in the Grand Masters division, winning their heats with impressive surfing were Glen Pringle (Australia), Fabio Gouveia (Brasil), Juan Ashton (Puerto Rico), Robert Boyle (South Africa), Horacio Ipucha (Argentina) and Chris Brooks (Australia).

On the Masters side, the best surfing was displayed by Dean Hall (AUS) who, after linking several strong moves on his best two waves, posted the highest combined and single wave score of his division (14.33 with a 7.83 and a 6.50). Wayne Monk (RSA) tied Hall, also posting a 7.83 to make it through in first place on his heat.

Former Venezuelan National Champion Sergio Martinsdefeated Carlos Santos from Brazil, performing precise and clean off the lips and cutbacks. “The waves were amazing, no wind, and there were some barrels,” said Martins. This is just the beginning. There are World Champs in the event and the level of surfing is really high. The Venezuelan Team is having a good time. Our motto is, ‘Unity, strength and conviction’.”

With a total of 114 heats, 48 hours of contest, the Panama ISA World Masters Surfing Championship has just begun. Tomorrow, day 2 of the event, we will see the first round of Women Masters, Kahunas and Grand Kahunas going to the water as well as the second round of the main event of Masters.

Greg Emslie is the 2010 Mr Price SA Open Champion

Greg Emslie is the 2010 Mr Price SA Open Champion. After two days of competition on Saturday and Sunday (August 28 & 29) in conditions that ranged from marginal 2 foot surf on Day One to perfect 5-6 foot offshore at Nahoon Reef on Day Two, the title in the eighth edition of the SA Open of Surfing went the way of the top seed.

Scottburgh local Prestwich produced the highest heat score of all three finals, 16 out of a possible 20, beating Dylan Lightfoot and fellow Jeffrey’s Bay surfer Steven Sawyer into second and third respectively. Another JBay local, Bertie Stuurman, achieved his best result in a major PST event when he finished fourth.

The experienced East London surfer was joined in the winner’s circle by fellow SA Team member Chantelle Rautenbach of Melkbosstrand, who won the Women’s title, and Slade Prestwich of Scottburgh whose brilliant performance in the Pro Junior Final saw him taking home the trophy.

Emslie was a standout throughout the event, setting benchmarks in every heat he surfed in. Even when conditions were small, and at times marginal, on Day One the current SA Champion was outstanding. In his first round Emslie showed his true skill by recording a 9. 20 out of 10 wave score which underlined his status as a true champion.

It was not all plain sailing in the final however and the thirty two year old was pushed all the way by 16 year-old Jeffreys Bay star Steven Sawyer who led the heat until Emslie caught his final high scoring rides. Simon Fish who makes surfboards out of Cape St Francis but hails from East London was third and father-to-be Tyrell Johnson of East London came fourth.

Emslie has now won four of the five PST events he has competed in this year and is not only the current SA Champion, National Team captain and Cold Water Classic winner but can now add a second SA Open title to his list of achievements in 2010.

Rautenbach produced top quality surfing in the Women’s final beating Kirsty Delport of Durban, local girl Alice Mc Gregor and fellow national team member Stacey Guy into second, third and fourth respectively.

Competitors in the 2010 Mr Price SA Open of Surfing were protected by the Surfing South Africa Shark Shield devices which were placed strategically in the line-up by the local lifeguards and other water craft on both days of the event.

The 2010 SA Open of Surfing was sponsored by Mr Price, sanctioned by Surfing South Africa and hosted by the Border Surfriders Association. It was a 3A Men’s Pro Surf Tour contest with the Women and Pro Juniors both 2A rated. R40 000 in total prize-money was on offer across the divisions.

Members of the 2010 SA Team as well as Head Coach Graham Hynes attended the event as part of their preparations for the 2010 ISA World Surfing Games in Peru in October. The team preparation, camps and fitness training as well as their attendance at the World Games is supported by a R250 000 grant from the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund.

Surfing South Africa is the recognized governing body for the sport and is a member of the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) and the International Surfing Association.

South Africa’s top surfers will be hoping that East London’s famous Nahoon Reef comes to the party this weekend when the seventh edition of the Mr Price SA Open of Surfing takes place at this famous surf spot .

The Mr Price SA Open is a premier tournament on the annual Surfing South Africa (SSA) Pro Surf Tour (PST) and offers R30,000 in prize-money to surfers in the 3A rated men’s, 2A women’s and 2A rated pro junior divisions.

This year the event features some of South Africa’s best men and women surfers who will be battling it out for all important PST ratings points and prize-money, including members of the South African team who will use the Mr Price SA Open as preparation for the ISA World Surfing Games in Peru in October.

Greg Emslie will be hoping to repeat his win of 2008 and must be an odds on favourite as Nahoon Reef is the home break for the Team Red rider, 2010 Mr Price WP Open champion, current South African Champion and 2010 SA Team member.

Emslie did not compete last year as he was surfing on the ASP World Tour but he has thrown his energy into local events this year and is heading the PST ratings for 2010. Last year’s winner, Wayne Monk, will not be able to defend his title as he is in Panama with the South African Masters Team competing in the ISA World Masters Championships.

2007 champion Devyn Mattheys is among the entries and aiming to use his home-break knowledge to his advantage while National Team members Warwick Wright of Cape Town and Casey Grant of Scottburgh are both capable of adding the SA Open Title to their list of successes.

Grant is certainly a surfer to watch having finished as runner up to Jordy Smith in the Mr Price Pro Ballito in early July.
There are numerous other top class surfers who will be taking to the water including local stars Simon Fish, Clinton Gravett, Tyrell Johnson, Philip Malherbe, Gary Muller and Travis Naude. Former SA Team captain Ryan Payne, now living in Cape Town, and 2010 National team reserve Llewellyn Whittaker of Mossel Bay are two of the surfers who like big surf and on their day could upset the best of them.

2009 Women’s Champion Bianca Buitendag of George is campaigning overseas and will not be in East London to defend her title while current SA women’s champion Heather Clark is competing at the ISA World Masters Championships in Panama so there will be a new champion come Sunday evening.

Red Team rider Stacey Guy and fellow SA Team member Chantelle Rautenbach, along with Alice Mc Gregor of East London, are the top three seeds in the Women’s draw but the likes of in form Women’s Day Challenge winner Kerri Hodgkinson of Cape Town and Kirsty Delport of Durban could surprise.

The Pro Junior Division seems wide open with the pick of the entries being Shawn Dennis of Durban , Slade Prestwich of Warner Beach, Haydn MacNicol of Scottburgh and the J-Bay crew of Steven Sawyer, Dylan Lightfoot, Bertie Stuurman and Dominique Abersalie. AND Remi Petersen.

Heats for the 2010 Mr Price SA Open are posted on the Surfing South Africa website surfingsouthafrica.co.za and the contest will be filmed for Vuzu and SuperSport by White Hot Media.

The Mr Price SA Open of Surfing is sanctioned by Surfing South Africa, the recognized governing body for the sport in South Africa. Border Surfriders Association are the hosts. Surfing South Africa projects are supported by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund.
