LOCATION

Florianopolis, the Island where the surf accommodation & camp is located, is the capital of the state of Santa Catarina and has a landscape sprinkled with lakes, sand dunes, forests and small islands all along the coast. THE SURF

Floripa, as the city is known locally is widely recognized as the surf capital of Brazil and is renowned for year-round consistent swell, diversity of breaks and crystal clear warm water. Floripa has waves that cater to all surf abilities, from first time surfers to the most experienced and hardcore big wave riders.

Florianopolis is a very privileged city for surfing since it receives swells from the main quadrants, east and south. It is possible to surf almost every day with waves going from 2 to 10 feet (0.5 to 3 meters) in all four seasons of the year. Conditions vary depending on swell, wind direction and intensity as well as the break’s bottom.

Dozens of nightclubs and hundreds of bars are spread through the city, but the central and Lagoa da Conceição areas offer most of the options. You will have a wide variety of rhythms and beats to choose from, going from local Brazilian music to rap, reggae, rock and roll, pop and electronic music. CULTURE

Florianopolis – or “Desterro” as it was originally called – was founded in 1700 and settled fifty years later by immigrants from the Portuguese mid-Atlantic islands of the Azores. Since then, it’s gradually developed from being a sleepy provincial backwater into a sleepy state capital. With the construction of the bridges linking the island with the mainland, Florianopolis as a port has all but died, and today the city thrives as an administrative, commercial and tourist centre. Land reclamation for a multi-lined highway and new bus terminals has totally eliminated the character of the old seafront. Despite all the changes, though, the late nineteenth-century pastel-colored, stuccoes buildings still recall faint “old world” images, while the relaxed, small-town atmosphere provides a total contrast to the excitement of São Paulo or Rio.

CUISINE

The cuisine of the island of Florianopolis has been greatly influenced by its past and present cultures. The impressions of their dishes are truly unique based on these different habits. Seafood is the city’s specialty. The oysters, cultivated in the south of the island can be consumed fresh out of the sea. The shrimp is the favorite aperitif, prepared and served in different ways. Tainha (Mullet) – fished between May and June, is prepared in “escalade” fashion: after salted and dried, it is grilled. Another characteristic of Florianopolis are the simple and cozy restaurants, close to the beaches and maintained by the fishermen. The city also has more sophisticated restaurants and fast food places, which serve international dishes, burgers, pizzas, sushi and so on.

FOOD/DRINK

Brazil has a wide variety of food therefore an even wider variety of restaurants, bars, cafes, delis, bakeries, markets and supermarkets. Good quality meals will range from U$ 5 to U$ 30 (top restaurants). Seafood is very cheap and mostly appreciated in most of the coastal cities and in Florianopolis you can get a dozen of oysters for about U$ 3. Besides that, it is possible to please almost any taste, going form fast food or pizza places to fancy international restaurants. The legal age for purchasing and consuming alcoholic beverages is 18, and a beer costs about U$ 1.5 (600 ml), and a soda or juice about U$ 1.

VISA INFO

Brazil accepts tourists from all over the world under the eligibility of a pre-requested Visa. There are different kinds of Visas, the most popular being the tourist and business. If you’re traveling for some other purpose, (example, educational, research or other) check with your Consulate prior to application. Keep in mind that it is unlawful to engage in business or professional activities in Brazil on a tourist visa. Ask your travel agent or consult the nearest Brazilian consulate/embassy

MONEY

The Brazilian currency is called “Real” (“heh-ALL”). The Atm and Bank network throughout Brazil will accept most of the bank/credit card network/operators. Cash and traveler checks can be exchanged in banks and exchange shops. Remember to keep your money in safe deposit boxes and go out only with the necessary amount for your daily needs.

TRANSPORTATION

Buses are totally safe and cheap (for about aU$1 you can go to any beach). Taxis can easily be found and are safe too, but make sure you come up to a price before you leave to your destination. In Florianopolis hitchhiking is still safe and a lot of people actually stop.

Car and motorcycle rental are also available with prices starting around U$ 20 a day.

CLOTHES

Winter time (June to August): Bring warm clothes such as pullovers, a rain coat, sweaters and pants to use during the mornings and the coldest days when the temperatures sometimes can get as low as 10ºC (50ºF) or lower.
Summer (from November to February): you should bring only light clothes, but a rain coat can be useful for the tropical rains that fall in this time of year. Don’t forget sunscreen since the sun can get very intense in this time of the year.
Mid-season: In these portions of the year the coastal areas will present warm days and cooler nights, so it is safe to pack a few warmer clothes as well as light ones.

HEALTH

Brazil has an excellent network of private hospitals and clinics in the major cities. Private medical assistance can be more expensive, but Brazil has a public health service that will look after foreign visitors in an emergency. Medical Insurance is recomended for all visitors. Usually vaccinations against Yellow Fever are not required when traveling to Brazil but there are some exceptions and some recommendations. For persons arriving from or having passed thru the following countries, within three months, a Yellow Fever International Immunization Certificate will be required. These certificates take 10 days to become effective and are valid for 10 years.
- Angola, Benin, Bolivia, Burkina, Cameroon, Columbia, Congo, Ecuador, Guyana, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Peru, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Venezuela and Zaire.
It is recommended however that all travelers anticipating the visitation to the following states in Brazil be vaccinated.
- Acre, Amazonas, Amapa, Distrito Federal, Goias, Maranho, Mato Grasso do Sul, Para, Rondonia and Tocantins.

SAFETY

Brazil is no more dangerous than anywhere in Europe or North America and violent crimes against tourists or foreign visitors are extremely rare. Brazil is also politically stable with no natural enemies and no terrorist activities. The crime tourists are most likely to fall victim to in Brazilian cities is robbery and pick pocketing, so do not leave your belongings unattended and do not wear jewelry in the streets. Always leave travelers checks, passports, air tickets and the like in the hotel safe deposit box. Visitors should however carry some form of ID, such as a photocopy of their passports, with them at all times.

Where is Florianopolis located and how do I get there?

Florianopolis is the capital of Santa Catarina, one of the richest per capita states in all of Brazil, and is located in the southern region of the country. It can be reached in approximately 1 hour by plane from São Paulo and 2 hours from Rio de Janeiro.

Arriving in Florianopolis from the U.S. is simple – a connection is made in São Paulo with a second leg available directly to Florianopolis. There are direct flights to São Paulo from most major U.S. cities, though one stop-over in the U.S. prior to arrival in Brazil is not uncommon.

There is a major airport in Florianopolis (airport code: FLN), located just 20 minutes from your Nexus Surf accommodations.

Are there any special travel requirements traveling to Brazil?

Yes. U.S. citizens must have a Visa to enter Brazil. Processing costs $100, and it may take up to 10 business days to complete, so make sure to apply early to avoid any last minute complications. If you live in or near a city where there is a Brazilian Consulate (Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Miami, Houston, Washington D.C., Chicago and Boston), you may apply in person. If not, or if you can’t get away to during the day to drop off your application, there are a number of third-party services specializing in Visa processing also.
Each Brazilian Consulate has its own website that provides more information on what is required for processing the Visa application at that particular location.

I have heard people talking about Brazil being dangerous, is Florianopolis safe?

Absolutely. While no place in the world is unfortunately 100% free of crime these days, Florianopolis is about as safe a city as they come. The bad rap Brazil has received in the international press is due almost single handedly to the large urban centers of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, where crime is rampant due to overcrowding and gross inequities in income distribution among the population. Florianopolis on the other hand has the feel and safety of a sleepy island paradise, and its inhabitants (many of whom moved here specifically to get away from the craziness of big city life in Brazil) go to great measures to safeguard the peaceful atmosphere in the city.

Additionally, you can rest assured because you will be in great hands during your entire stay. What kind of surf board should I use, and do I need to bring my own?

Basically, if the board works on the waves back home, it will work here. As a general rule, local surfers prefer shorter, smaller boards, but that is more for a reflection of Brazil surf style than anything else. Beginners do not need to bring any equipment, as they have everything on hand you’ll need.
