The Star Ocean Speed Boat is an alternative way to surf all of the mentawai waves, even Telo ! It provides ” Land Based ” Surf charter trips for max 6 surfers, so you are on the boat during the day and you sleep in a hotel on shore, or  “On Board” surf trips for maximum 3 surfers.

With the Star Ocean Speed Boat you can have a private “Living on Board” holiday with just two or three of you and anytime you like.

They will pick you up at Minangkabau International Airport , and take you straight to Star Ocean Boat. For safety, they don’t travel at night so please arrange flights that suit you if you wish to travel on the same day.

* Sea Transportation
Headed to Mentawai with Star Ocean Boat, it will take more or less 4 hours depending on sea conditions. Once they get there, surfers can have some rest and they will take you to the waves on the next day in the morning.

LOCATION

The Mentawai Islands lie approximately 150 kilometres off the coast of mainland Sumatra, Indonesia. Aloita Resort & Spa is located on the island of Silabok, only 10 min from Tua Pejat, the capital of the Mentawais. It is well connected with the Sumatran mainland by regular ferry and air services.

SURF

More than 70% of the waves in the Mentawais are accessible within an hour by speedboat from Aloita Resort.

Right in their backyard only 10 minutes away are almost a dozen consistent surf spots including Telescopes, the world class lefthander which offers longer and straighter barrels than Macaronis when it is firing.

Mellower waves are also close by including a fun learners wave right at the end of Aloita Beach. There are still a few secret spots they keep to themselves though you might just find yourself surfing them when conditions are right! Their Western surfguide will ensure you are always in the right place at the right time.

Telescopes- one of the jewels in the Mentawai crown and a definite fave of the Aloita crew. Teles get natural footers just as amped as goofys because it is so straight, clean and readable riding it backside. The take off gives you just enough time to draw a line and get under the curtain. Even when Teles is breaking at just head high it is a super fun wave and also a great beginners wave as the reef is quite deep. And the best thing about Teles is that it is the closest wave to Aloita Resort- less than 10 minutes by speedboat.

Icelands- Icelands as with most of the other waves in the zone is a left and is possibly the most ‘jekyll and hyde’ like wave in the Ments. When everywhere in the chain is flat you can still pull up to Icelands and get a headhigh wave with a lazy but whackable wall. With a big west swell when everyone is getting excited about Telescopes the Ice turns into a monster with barrels big enough to drive the speedboat through. 90% of the time Icelands is a mellow, easy wave situated about a mile away from Teles.

Scarecrows- Another small swell left that holds size and another of fave of the Aloita crew. Scarecrows or Frankos or Diablos as its sometimes referred to (!) has the ability to spread out a crowd with its several different take off spots. It is not a picture perfect indo reef break but shifts around depending on swell direction, size and currents. The wave stands up only slightly before takeoff providing a mellow drop and a long workable wall where you need to get a bit of speed up before heading down into the section of the reef we call ‘The Curry Bowl’. The Curry Bowl on its day will deliver you into a barrel as good as anywhere else in the Ments or it will give you a beating that might find you taking 5 in the channel for a few minutes.

Jaraiks- On the rare occasions when the Ments goes dead flat this fun little left is our saving grace. It is nothing more than a bend in the reef and hard to spot until you pull up right in front of it. Surfable on all tides and East – South East winds, Jaraiks actually stops working the moment there is any swell!

Diving
Aloita Dive Centre has been operating in the Mentawais for four years and is the only dive centre located in this amazing part of the world. While the centre has been in operation for some time, there is still plenty to explore with virgin reef plentiful a short distance from the resort. Their professional dive crew can offer you courses ranging from the entry level Open Water course to dive leader. Or if you’ve never tried scuba diving before, they’d love to take you for your first experience in the calm, crystal clear water of the Mentawais.

Fishing
Fishing as a sport in the Mentawais is still in its infancy though indications of its potential can seen in the types of fish caught by surf charter operators over the last few years. The zone around ‘Setan Island’ which lies in front of the resort is possibly the most abundant fishing ground in the Mentawais. Aloita Resort has available some trolling rigs for guests use. Of course you are more than welcome to bring your own gear.

Spearfishing
is allowed only for free divers in limited areas. The Mentawais has been featured as a spearfishing destination on several Hawaiian dive magazine articles.
They always aim to implement a ‘catch what we eat’ policy and they are more than happy to have our chef prepare your catch cooked in the style you like.

Siberut Cultural Excursions
The jungles of Siberut Island are home to a race of people that have been studied intensively by anthropologists for years due to their unique and enduring traditional culture. Though these people are slowly being syncretised into Western ways of life, in the heartland of the island you will still find Siberut natives who are living day to day lives as they have for hundreds of years.

GETTING THERE

GETTING TO PADANG, WEST SUMATRA, INDONESIA

Padang, West Sumatra, is the city closest in proximity to the Mentawai Islands .
Padang ’s Minangkabau International Airport is easily accessible via international flights from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur and daily domestic flights from Jakarta, Medan, and Batam.

GETTING AROUND PADANG

Private livery service for transfers between Minangkabau International Airport, Padang City, and Bungus Harbor (where the Ambu-Ambu Ferry docks) is available through ALOITA RESORT & SPA, if requested.
Upon your arrival in Padang, an ALOITA agent will greet you at the airport and escort you and your party to your desired destination. They will gladly accommodate your luggage and surfboard bags, as necessary.

Local taxis are also readily available at Minangkabau International Airport, Padang City, and Bungus Harbor .
Taxis originating from the airport have set rates depending upon your destination and may be arranged through a dispatcher located in the arrival terminal.  Otherwise, taxi rates in Padang are typically negotiable.

GETTING TO THE MENTAWAI ISLANDS

From Padang, the Mentawai Islands are only 40 minutes away by plane or 10 hours away by overnight ferry.
For your convenience, when booking your stay at ALOITA RESORT & SPA, we would be happy to arrange transportation between Padang and the Mentawai Islands for you and your party, according to your schedule and preferences.

BY AIRPLANE
Sabang Merauke Air (SMA) flies between Padang and Rokot every Saturday.
From Padang, flights depart at 9:30 a.m. and arrive in Rokot at 10:10 a.m.
From Rokot, flights depart at 10:30 a.m. and arrive in Padang at 11:10 a.m.

Large parties (maximum capacity 18 passengers or 9 passengers with surfboards) may consider chartering a private flight with SMA to ensure availability of seats for their requested dates. Please contact us for SMA charter availability and rates.

An ALOITA agent and speedboat will greet you upon your arrival in Rokot and escort you and your party to the Resort. Speedboat transport is also available from the Resort to Rokot upon your departure. Please note that transport between Rokot and the Resort (approximately 40 minutes) incurs a fuel surcharge of US$30 per person, each way.

BY FERRY
The Ambu-Ambu Ferry travels overnight from Padang to Tua Pejat every Tuesday night and the last two Saturdays of each month. From Tua Pejat to Padang , the ferry travels every Wednesday and the last two Sundays of each month.

The ferry departs at 9:00 p.m. and arrives at approximately 7:00 a.m. the following morning.
Cost of one-way Ambu-Ambu ticket between Padang and Tuapejat1: Private cabin with A/C: US$ 62

An ALOITA agent and speedboat will greet you upon your arrival in Tuapejat and provide free shuttle service (approximately 5 minutes) to the Resort. This shuttle service is also available from the Resort to Tuapejat upon your departure.

1.SMA and Ambu-Ambu tickets are subject to availability, and reservations should be requested at least two weeks in advance of your anticipated arrival in Padang . All ticket prices are subject to change without notice.

2.SMA passengers (adults and children 2-12) are restricted to one (1) piece of checked baggage ( 10 kg ) and one (1) carry-on ( 5 kg ) each. Excess baggage is charged Rp 5,000 per kilogram.

3.SMA passengers with surfboards are restricted to a maximum of three (3) surfboards in one (1) surfboard bag ( 2.50 m x 0.45 m x 0.40 m ; 20 kg ) each. Additional surfboards are charged an excess fee of one seat a piece.
4.There are a limited number of private cabins on the Ambu-Ambu Ferry, each with two or four single beds. The first passenger in the cabin pays US$62. Each subsequent passenger sharing the cabin pays US$10.
